Sir George looked in at Holland and Barrett in the Chantry Centre in Andover to listen to concerns about a European Directive on Food Supplements.
"The European Commission is about to set maximum limits for vitamins and minerals in many of the supplements which my constituents buy. Holland and Barrett are worried that safe and popular products may be banned if the level is set too low."
"Vitamins and minerals may only be included in supplements if they are listed in the annexes of the Directive. Some 300 nutrients currently safely available on the UK market are missing from these lists. The Food Standards Agency has allowed over 300 nutrient sources not on these lists temporary exemption, but this runs out next year. If nothing is done, many of the products shown on these shelves will become illegal."
"I am taking this up with Ministers to see if we can make some progress."
