Sir George has welcomed Ken Clarke's appointment as Shadow Business Secretary.

Sir George worked with Ken Clarke in the Treasury from 1994 to 1995, and supported his three campaigns to become Party Leader. The two men have also worked together on the Democracy Task Force.

"I am delighted that Ken is back in front-line politics; his authority and experience are just what are needed in these difficult economic times, and he is always listened to with respect by MP's on both sides of the House."

Ken Clarke was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1993 to 1997, introducing tough measures to rebalance the books after the recession in the early 1990's, and being widely credited with bringing stability to the economy in the run up to the 1997 General Election.
