Sir George visited the Salto Kids Club in Charlton as part of the 5th Annual Kids Club Week. (For details see below)
"This is an after school club for primary school children, based at the newly opened Salton Centre off Charlton Rd. It caters for up to 32 children each afternoon, from 3 to 6. I was not surprised to hear that it is fully subscribed, as it is a popular and well-run facility."
Sir George was shown round by Debbie Roberts, and helped dish out the jelly and ice-cream during the tea-break. He was told of plans to expand the centre, and of the need to develop similar facilities for secondary school children.
The letter from Anne Longfield, Director of the Kid Clubs Network is below.
Dear Sir George
Join the celebration!
5th annual Kids' Clubs Week
26th to 30th June
Out of school clubs are growing fast and clubs throughout the country will soon be celebrating Kids' Clubs Week - the national week for out of school
childcare. I am writing to you to let you know about the events that will be happening in your area and nationally during Kids' Clubs Week and how you
can get involved. Kids' Clubs Week gives many people the chance to discover the opportunities that out of school clubs give to children, families and the
wider community and gives many more the chance to celebrate.
This year we are celebrating a major expansion in the number of out of school clubs. There are now over 6,000 clubs in the UK - 1,000 of them established
last year and we are expecting a further 2,000 to start up in 2000. New clubs are starting up at the rate of 6 per day. By 2005 there are likely to be around 15,000 clubs in the UK compared to a total of just 2,000 five years ago.
Our events this year include a question time for children at the House of Commons on the 29th June with major contributors from each major party. Our
annual summer reception at the Atrium takes place on the 28th June to celebrate the new clubs that have opened in the last year.
Other events in London include the Excellence in Childcare Awards and gala dinner on the 27th June. A major international seminar will bring together
experts and practitioners in childcare for older children from around the world.
Events will also be taking place around Britain through the week and kids' clubs will be offering MPs the chance to visit a club and take part in activities.
