Sir George looked in at Sainsbury's in Shepherds Spring Lane in Andover to celebrate the company's 140th birthday, and to cut the cake.

Sir George was met by the Store Manager, Jane Stephens, and he congratulated the store on its achievements.

"My wife and I shop at all the supermarkets in Andover, and enjoy the friendly service that we get. The competition in the town keeps everybody on their toes, and drives up standards even higher, and also encourages cost cutting and bargains."

"As part of its 140th birthday celebrations, the store is hoping to find customers who can reminisce about the days before the introduction of self-scan checkouts, organic food and Chip and PIN."

"Jane is looking for customers and colleagues who have interesting and quirky memories of the store, and is after anyone who has Sainsbury memorabilia."

Sir George did some week-end shopping, and took home two pieces of the celebratory cake
