Andover and District MENCAP need to raise an additional £600,000 to support the building of the new Resource Centre on the site of the Wellington Arms in Winchester Street.

Simon Tyler, Chief Executive, told a Cheese and Wine Reception at the existing Headquarters - The Bonhomie Centre in South End Road - that the total cost of the project was £2.2 million of which £1.6 million had already been raised. He said the Wellington Arms was in a better location, near the centre of the town, and as it was on a busy road it would raise the profile of the organisation. They had ambitious plans for a new two storey resource centre, and the building would be available to other voluntary organisations in the town. He said that Liz Hall would be chairing a sub-committee which would organise a series of events to reach the £600,000 target. Simon explained that The Bonhomie Centre, where they had been for 48 years, was now too small for the range of activities provided, and they needed to move to a bigger building. In the new Resource Centre there would be a sensory room, and there would be drop in activity for the members. He said that Andover and District Mencap was an organisation owned by its members, and the new project would be centred round their needs. After he spoke, Lady Young launched the fundraising programme, and urged all those present to see whether they could sponsor or organise an event that would help raise the £600,000.
