Sir George officially opened one of the three Basingstoke Heritage Trails at the Silk Mill in Whitchurch. At the ceremony was the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Councillor Brian Gurden, and the Mayor Whitchurch, Cllr Vince Bradbury.

"This scenic walk along the Test shows the impact of the industrial revolution in Whitchurch, Laverstoke and Freefolk. One can see the various mills, and the Whitchurch Silk Mill is still in operation. This walk is easily accessible from Whitchurch Station, and it is well signposted from the Silk Mill. The Hampshire Museums and Galleries Trust together with Basingstoke and Deane, and Hampshire County Council have done a superb job in negotiating with the various landowners, and layout out a pleasant and easily negotiable walk. I am sure it will be popular with local people, and also with visitors to the area."
