Sir George Young formally reopened the refurbished hall in Ashmansworth, and it was subsequently blessed by The Rev. Christine Dale. "The village raised a large sum of money, and they were helped by the lottery, the Parish Council and Hampshire County Council. The rather dark building, built 54 years ago, has been transformed into a much lighter and more welcoming building, which is a tremendous asset for the village. With the loss of the local pub, The Plough, a few years ago, the village hall is the only place where the village can meet."
In his speech, Sir George paid special tribute to Mike Sarson, the Treasurer of the committee who masterminded the refurbishment and did a lot of the work himself, and Helen Skinner, the Chairman of the Committee who played a key role in mobilising support in the village for the project. He also thanked Sarah and Johnny Wheeler for providing champagne for the event.
