A tennis tournament held in Newtown Common raised £750 for the local church

"Many congratulations to Julian Roskill for masterminding this event, which attracted about 30 tennis players, and a larger number of croquet players. For children, swimming was available, and there were many spectators who subscribed for home-made tea, cakes and sandwiches."

Three courts were used and the event was blessed with fine weather. The Treasurer of the Parochial Church Council, Tony Davies, thanked the Roskills for their hospitality.

Sir George said that the semi-finals and finals were of high quality, with good sportmanship on show.
