Members of Overton Dramatic Society switched on the lights, as the shops in Overton stayed open late at the beginning of the Christmas Shopping season. "There was a marvellous village atmosphere during the evening, with the choir singing carols, entertainment for the children, and local shops staying open for those who get back from work late." Sir George signed a petition, asking the committee in charge of the Olympic Torch route - LOCOG - to allow the torch to go through Overton. "Overton has many athletic and sporting organisations based in the village, and I believe it wholly suitable that the Olympic Torch should go through this centre of sporting excellence."
