The Mayor of Test Valley, Cllr Zilliah Brooks, formally opened the new village shop, next to the White Hart in Penton Mewsey.
Cllr Ian Robin and his wife Catherine, together with other volunteers, have been the driving force behind the establishment of the new shop, in an empty building next to the White Hart.
Local residents will volunteer to man the shop, which will provide bread, milk, eggs and fresh produce. "At a time when some villages are losing their village shops, it is great news that Penton Mewsey has opened a new shop - on the site where the last village shop used to be. Ian and Catherine Robin have put a lot of hard work into making the premises suitable for retail purposes, and it was generous of Burbages to donate a hundred loaves to the first customers at the shop. The landlord of the White Hart has generously made the premises available, which will help make the shop a viable unit."
Message below from the Shops promoters.
"Catherine, Ian, Mark, Danielle and Guy would like to thank everyone that came out to support the opening of the Penton Village Shop on Saturday. Never in our wildest dreams did we expect to have 200+ people turn up on the day. The first people started arriving at 10:30 and by 11:00am the queue had stretched out on to the road and past the pub.
We would also like to thank the Mayor for taking the time out of her busy diary to cut the ribbon, and all our suppliers for getting everything to us on time. In particular Cherry Tree for their amazing Jams and Chutneys, Parkers for their chocolates, Said ( The White Hart Chef ) for his home made cake & mince pies and Burbidges Bakery for providing us with 100 loaves of bread which were eagerly snapped up by the waiting crowd.
Finally, it would be silly of us not to let you know of our Christmas tree delivery service

6ft or 7ft - £40
