The Mayor and Mayoress of Whitchurch, Cllr Barry and Sandra Jackman, handed over a petition to Sir George signed by thousands of people from Whitchurch, Overton and surrounding villages.
The petition asked Lord Coe and the London Organising Committeem of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to adopt a Torch Relay Route that included towns along the B3400 west of Basingstoke, and then south through Sutton Scotney and Wonston.
"The petition has been signed by a large number of pupils at Testbourne School in Whitchurch, and by children staying at the Naomi House Hospice in Sutton Scotney. They would all be thrilled to see the torch go by."
We know the Relay is visiting big towns nearby on that date: Basingstoke, Kings Worthy, Winchester, Andover – what has not yet been announced is the route between Basingstoke and Kings Worthy — that is where this campaign comes in.
Sir George paid tribute to Andrew Reeves-Hall, who organised the campaign. "This campaign follows a broadband campaign a year ago, where Whitchurch signed up a higher percentage of telephone subscribers than any other part of the coutnry, asking for high-speed broadband. I hope this one is as successful."
Sir George will be delivering the petition to Lord Coe next week.
