The Scouts and Girl Guides in Hampshire North were challenged to work on a community project for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, and Margaret Peach, the District Commissioner (Girl-Guiding, Clere District) chose two projects in the village. One was to plant up a new wild flower area in St Mary's churchyard; and the second was to create a garden at the Fieldgate Centre, and tidy up the area around it. Sir George unveiled a plaque, commemorating the opening of the garden at the Fieldgate Centre on June 15. "Many congratulations to Margaret Peach for driving this project forward, and to Ron Walker for providing the professional horticultural input. The Guides and Scouts greatly enjoyed the project, and learnt much about gardening while it took place. Kingsclere Parish Council generously donated £100 towards the costs, and the garden will be a long lasting memory of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee."
