One of Sir George's last commitments as a Minister was to attend the Paralympic Games.

“I was given the opportunity to take a guest and there are many organisations in the constituency that help those with disability or impairment. I am patron of Streets Ahead – a football club based in Andover which enables those who find life difficult to participate within a mainstream football team to enjoy the sport. Sue Simmonds, the Secretary to the Club, has done heroic work over the last four years to build it up and so I invited her along as my guest for the day”.

Sir George and Sue Simmonds met at Stratford railway station and then went to the Family Lounge at the Aquatic Centre, before watching the morning’s qualifying heats in the swimming competition.

“I was enormously impressed by the commitment of the swimmers, many of whom had overcome severe impairment in order to take part in the sport. To take part in a Butterfly race with no upper limbs requires courage and determination, and the support which all the competitors got from the crowd at the Aquatic Centre was tremendous”.
