Sir George rejoins the Government

Following the resignation of Andrew Mitchell, Sir George has been appointed Government Chief Whip.

"While sad about the circumstances in which this has happened, I am delighted to have this opportunity to serve in the Government again."

"As Leader of the House until the recent reshuffle, I worked closely with the Whips in both Coalition Parties, and look forward to working with them again."

Sir George served as an Opposition Whip from 1976 to 1979; and as a Government Whip (Comptroller of the Household) from July to November 1990.

He was Shadow Leader of the House from July 1998 to September 2000; and from September 2009 to May 2010; and Leader of the House from May 2010 to September 2012.
