Sir George formally opened the refurbished branch of Barclays Bank at 5 High Street in Andover. "Over the past few weeks, they have transformed the banking hall so it is much lighter, with much more space for customers. They have repositioned the tills and taken down the screens, so there is a more welcoming atmosphere. They have also put television screens so, if people have to wait to be served, they can watch BBC 24 hour news. It is now a better place to visit, and the working conditions for the staff have also improved."
After the opening, there was entertainment in the High Street by a troup of dancers, and Sir George had an opportunity to meet all the staff, and go behind the screens, including a visit to the strong room. "I was most impressed with the security arrangements in the bank, and I hope that other retailers in the High Street take the opportunity to look at their premises, and see whether they might be invested in and modernised."
