Sir George cuts the tape for a sponsored walk. Next to him is Jon Stannah, Managing Director of Stannah Stairlifts of Andover.
Stannah joined forces with Help the Aged to raise funds for charity with the world's largest walking event: Worldwide Walks - Global Embrace 2000.
In 1999, over one million people in 97 countries around the world participated in a walk-all on the same day. Stannah and Help the Aged hope to break this record on 1st October 2000, by encouraging as many people of all ages and abilities to either organise or take part in a walk, or at the very least sponsor a walker.
The Worldwide Walks have already attracted a host of celebrity supporters:
Janet Street-Porter - a keen walker and past president of the Ramblers' Association - is actively involved, while fitness fanatic Diana Moran (of Green Goddess fame),is also preparing for a hearty stroll.
At least 40 walks have been organised in the UK, all starting at 11.00am on Sunday 1st October. Stannah arranged the walk starting and finishing at their Andover headquarters in Watt Close, East Portway
The Test Valley Brass Band were there to send the walkers off in style. The route of the walk was devised by the Test Valley Council and is 3½ miles long taking in the Charlton and Anton Lakes areas. It was promoted as a family occasion and the route was wheelchair friendly.
