Lord Howell, a former Transport Secretary and Sir George talk to Lionel Newman (right) of Hampshire County Council at a public exhibition and consultation at Penton Village Hall. The proposals come from Hampshire County Council and Test Valley Borough Council and concern a proposed traffic management scheme for Charlton Road, Hatherden Road, Foxcotte Road and Foxcotte Lane in Andover. Both Sir George and Lord Howell live in Penton Mewsey, and were interested in proposals to improve road safety.
The scheme forms part of the Andover Transportation Strategy which has been developed to provide a fully integrated approach to transport taking into account local views arising from previous consultations.
The draft proposals are aimed at reducing vehicle speeds, improving safety and
assisting vulnerable road users including children walking and cycling to school and
patients attending the local hospital ad medical centre. Measure also include the
provision of junction improvements, gateway treatments, carriageway narrowings, a
new cycle route and new crossing facilities.

“This is the second exhibition I have been to, where the local authorities are proposing schemes
that calm traffic and promote cycling. I was most impressed by the effort made to consult and answer questions from local residents."
