County Councillor Pat West unveiled the Skye Orchard Mosaic on the open space by Topaz Drive in Andover. The orchard is a project of Andover Transition Town, which was set up some three and a half years ago to promote awareness of issues relating to climate change and sustainability, and planting fruit trees off Topaz Drive will encourage the families in the area to look after the orchard, enjoy it's shade and it's fruit. Carol Batholomew, from Test Valley Friends of the Earth, explained the thinking behind the project and introduced Pat West. She thanked Test Valley Borough Council for it's contribution towards the trees and welcomed this initiative not far from where she lives, and in her county council ward. Also at the event was fellow County Councillor Pam Mutton, and Test Valley Major Dorothy Baverstock. The mosaic was named after Skye Gillis, who died tragically young, and whose father spoke at the unveiling. The mosaic was put together by pupils at Portway Infant and Junior School and at Harroway Comprehensive and the images depict an orchard.
