Sir George formally opened the Vernham Dean Village Fete, in driving rain.
"This year the Village Playing Field Association combined with the school to hold a joint fete, and the weather couldn't have dampened the enthusiasm for the event".
The proceeds will be divided equally between the school and the Playing Field Association. The school will use the funds for enhancements, reducing the cost to pupils of visits, and also to enhance the learning environment and create new playing and learning areas.
The Playing Fields Association will use their share of the proceeds to build an all weather sports pitch for the school and residents of Vernham Dean.
The beer tent, under cover, was a popular venue, selling beer from Uphams, a local brewery. There were the usual attractions of Beat the Goalie, a bouncy castle, nail painting, a Merry-Go-Round and a large number of cake stalls.
Sir George congratulated Nikki Haigh and Carol Ward for all the work they had put into making the event a success. During the afternoon, the sun came out.
