Sir George formally opened OpenStudios 2014 at New Greenham Arts in the Greenham Business Park. He was introducted by the chair Pat Eastop MBE, and was shown round the exhibition by John Brazendale. Also present was the Chairman of West Berkshire District Council, Keith Chopping, the Mayor and Mayoress of Newbury and the Leader of Basingstoke and Deane District Council, Cllr Clive Sanders.
Opening the Exhibition, Sir George thanks the donors, sponsors and supporters of the scheme and paid tribute to the quality of the work displayed by local artists. "This is a fantastic showcase for the talents of West Berkshire and North Hampshire, and we are enormously fortunate to have Open Studios to give local folk an opportunity to see the fruits of their labours."
Sir George said it was important for the next generation to be encouraged to take up art, and he hoped that the exhibition would attract young people and then they would be encouraged to develop their skills at painting, photography, sculpture and the other forms of art that were on display.
The exhibition is open from May 3 to May 26, and it is linked to the Newbury Spring Festival. This is the twenty-sixth year of Open Studios, highlighting the visual arts. Over a hundred artists take part in Open Studios.
