Colonel Christopher Newbould CBE gave a talk at the Portal Hall in Burghclere entitled "1914 The Summer The Old World Died"

Colonel Christopher Newbould was commissioned into the Glosters in 1961 and, since he retired in 1990, he has studied military history. Two years ago, he gave a talk in the same location about Dunkirk, and he is now Director of Validation at the International Guide of Battlefield Guides. "His talk about World War 1 was fascinating, putting it into the context of the social and economic conditions in Britain at the time. He had some marvellous old photographs, showing the challenges that confronted the country in what was clearly a very polarised society. After his talk, he answered a range of questions about the quality of military leadership at the time, and asked whether there were some lessons to be learnt today." At the talk with Colonel Newbould were Sir George and two local councillors, Donald Sherlock and Cathy Osselton, together with Tom Sneyd who organised the event.
