Sir George joined Cancer Research UK scientists at Westminster to find out more about the Charity's plan to accelerate progress, and help save more lives in this constituency. "Cancer Research UK's ambition is that, within 20 years, three in four of all cancer patients diagnosed will survive for at least 10 years. Some exciting work is going on about the biology of cancer, and hopefully this will bring forward the day when all cancers can be cured." Cancer Research UK's work has been at the heart of the fight against cancer for the last 40 years and, today, 2 in 4 people diagnosed with cancer will survive the disease for at least 10 years, compared to just 1 in 4 in the early 70s. "It is good news that there have been such significant steps forward for cancer patients, with more people surviving the disease and living longer. However, there is much more that can be done and I back todays campaign to invest in research, and bring relief to cancer sufferers." The one year cancer survival rate in Sir George's constituency is 71.3% - higher than the English average of 68.2%. However the English average is lower than the best performing countries in Europe so there is room for improvement. People with a suspected cancer can see a specialist within 2 weeks in Sir Geoorge's constituency, with 95.3% of those with a suspected cancer see a specialist within 2 weeks - which is equal to the national average. 99.4% of patients in North West Hants wait 6 weeks or less for a diagnostic test for cancer.
