Sir George pays tribute to his predecessor, Sir David Mitchell
30 Aug 2014
I was very sorry to hear that David died earlier today, and Aurelia and I send our sympathy to his son Andrew, and to his other children and grandchildren.
When I was adopted as the Conservative candidate for NW Hants in 1995, David, who had announced his retirement earlier in the year, could not have been more supportive. He was a popular and hard-working MP, first for Basingstoke and then for NW Hants, as well as holding Ministerial posts in Trade, Northern Ireland and Transport. In Opposition from 1974-1979, he helped shape his Party's approach to Small Business. He was loyal, unflappable and hard-working.
He was Master of the Worshipful Company of Vintners, as well asa Director of El Vinos in Fleet St.
His autobiography, from House to House, is beautifully written, giving an insight into his family history, his career in the wine trade and his experiences as a Minister and local MP.
Until relatively recently, he would come to local constituency events and stood down on as Association President last year.
David was a good friend, who served his country well. He will be much missed by his many friends in the constituency.
