Andover Trees United held a “Poppies and Poems” day at Harmony Woods, beginning at 10 0’clock. Part of the task was to plant a commemorative hedge, and the first sapling was planted by Sir George and the Mayor, Cllr Jan Lovell. “Although it was a filthy day, there was a good community spirit on the site and a reasonable turnout to plant the hedge, to support the Andover Cubs Planting Trees, and to prepare the ground for poppy seed sowing by children later on.” Music was provided by Carol Bartholomew, and World War 1 lives were remembered in words, music and poetry.

The circular hedge will both commemorate the start of the First World War, and also commemorate the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. “I would like to congratulate Wendy Davis and the team for organising this day, and for adding to the attractions of Harmony Woods.”
