"The campaign by the Royal British Legion for compensation for former Japanese prisoners of war received tremendous support. In North West Hants, where there are large number who serve or who have served in the Armed Forces, there were very strong feelings on this subject, shared by many who have no direct connection with this issue. All MP's who supported the campaign have had a letter from Ian Townsend, Secretary General of the RBL.
"It would have been better if the money had come from the Japanese Government. As this sadly is not possible, it is right that the British taxpayer should discharge this obligation."
