Sir George is backing an appeal from Cancer Research UK to save the lives of more cancer patients, as news comes that one in two will be diagnosed with the disease at some point.

"I attended a parliamentary event held by Cancer Research UK to mark World Cancer Day and to encourage MPs to support their 'Cross Cancer Out' campaign."

The Charity is calling on MPs to back measures to ensure that cancer patients receive the best treatment and are diagnosed early enough for that treatment to make a difference.

"Our cancer survival rates still lag behind the best in Europe, and Cancer Research UK makes the point that support for public awareness campaigns will increase screening take up, and thereby help to save lives. They are also promoting equal access to innovative evidence-based treatments."
