Sir George was invited to lunch at the Civic Centre in Basingstoke by the Mayor, Councillor Roger Gardiner. At the lunch was the Leader of the Council, Clive Sanders, together with the Deputy Mayor and senior officers.

At the end, Sir George was presented with a shield inscribed with the motto of Basingstoke and Deane "Steadfast in Service". On the back was an inscription "To Sir George Young on his retirement as Member of Parliament for North West Hants".

"It was very kind of the Mayor to extend his hospitality to me. It was also a good opportunity to catch up on some of the current issues concerning the Borough."
