Sir George cut the ribbon to re-open the village shop at St Mary Bourne, which has turned itself into a Community Interest Company.

The Chairman of the CIC, Ian Green, welcomed the village shop, and thanked Lesley Barry, for keeping the shop and post office going through recent challenging years. He also welcomed Liz Parker, the shop manager, to the event. Liz lives in the village and is a qualified sub Post Mistress. The shop supplies a wide range of goods, and Ian Green explained that it would be focusing on locally produced produce.

Sir George congratulated the village on re-opening the shop, at a time when shops up and down the country were closing. He said that this would be one of his last civic duties as the local M.P., and it was appropriate that this should take place at St Mary Bourne, where he used to live and where he had opened the original shop some 15 years' earlier.
