Highclere and East Woodhay Conservatives met at East Woodhay Village Hall for their Christmas Lunch, under John Izett's Chairmanship. Four local politicians were amongst the many who attended - on the left Sir David Mitchell, former MP for NW Hants and President of NWHCA; Sir George: Cllr Mike Ross, the local District Councillor and Stafford Trendall, prospective County Council candidate for the area.
Speaking at the lunch, Sir George said the electorate was more volatile than he had ever known it. "When I started, 40% voted Conservative; 40% always voted Labour, and the balance decided the outcome. Now, 20% always vote Conservative, 20% Labour and the balance decided the outcome. And the opinion polls show enormous swings over a very short period of time. In my judgement the next election is wide open."
