HRH The Duke of Ediburgh opened "Milestones" - Hampshire's living history museum. It was built at a cost of £10 million, with £6m coming from the lottery and post of the balance from Hampshire County Council and Basingstoke and Deane District Council.
"I have watched this museum grow, as I look out from the train as it leaves Basingstoke station. The inside is as impressive as the outside. As a former Secretary of State for Transport, I was fascinated by its depiction of transport through the centuries. The museum does not just have cars and engines, but it has buildings and atmosphere as well. The reconstructions are very realistic, and the section on Taskers of Andover is particularly well done. There is a very impressive old British Rail booking office, and a pub with beer at tuppence a pint. But that is just the historic price."
Len Fuller, who used to run Taskers and who donated some of the older traction engines on display, is shown next to one of them.
