Sir George signs Oxfam petition
12 May 1999
Visiting the Oxfam Shop in the Chantry Centre, Andover, Sir George signed up for the Oxfam new "Education Now" International Campaign. Oxfam supporters across the world are taking similar action to highlight the global crisis in education and demand that every child should have an equal chance of a quality education. Sir George signed up at the Andover shop, where local people have shown their support on earlier occasions for the carity's campaigns.

"125 million children are currently missing school" said Sir George. "That's roughly the same number of school children in Europe and the USA put together; and there are still 880 million illiterate adults across the world. Oxfam has chosen to campaign on education because it is the single most powerful weapon against poverty. They have my full support."
