Sir George formally opened a number of major structural improvements to Portway Junior School. These included a new office complex, a complete overhaul of the Year 3 classroom area, a purpose designed music and drama room, and a new computer suite - shown above.
"I visited the school the day after the League Table for Junior Schools was published, so I was able to congratulate the school on their achievement. The school was on good form, rehearsing for some end of term performances."
As part of European and International Day of Disabled People 2000, Sir George was accompanied by Jonathan Sparks and Melanie Barnes from the Enham Trust.
"Jonathan and Melanie wanted an insight into the life of an MP; as I spend quite a bit of time visiting schools, I was delighted that they could join me at Portway and I am grateful to the school for making them so welcome."
