Sir George visited Upton to meet villagers who had been badly affected by the recent floods. “Of all the villages in my constituency that were flooded, Upton was probably the hardest hit. The river from Vernham Dean to Ibthorpe overflowed, and went through people’s homes and gardens. The village has no main drainage, and many families have been without sanitation in their home since just after Christmas – and are likely to remain so until March. They have also had to move their furniture onto the first floor.”
Sir George is pursuing with the Environment Agency and Hampshire County Council a long-term solution. “If this happened just once every 25 years, it might be possible to live with it. But it has happened twice in five years and is likely to happen again. This is not on.”
