Bridget Towle, the Chief Guide, invited Sir George and other MP's to the Annual Parliamentary Reception. Sir George met Joyce Abernerthy (in front with the light blouse) who is a Ranger Guide based in Southampton and a Senior Section Adviser. She told Sir George of the activities being promoted by the Guide Association to attract girls, and he met members from Essex South East section.
"With 700,000 members in the UK, the Guide Association is the largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women. I was very impressed to hear of their voluntary development work overseas and environment protection schemes. It is important to foster amongst young people the importance of volunteering; the Guide Association does this, and helps girls grow up in a challenging and sometimes dangerous world."
