Sir George with Tom Coups at Ordnance Survey Headquarters in Southampton.

Sir George visited Ordnance Survey in Southampton to be briefed on the work they do. He was shown round by Steve Erskine, Director of Graphic Brands; Dave Lovell, Government Policy Unit and Alan Sivyour, Exhibition Centre Manager.
He was shown how Ordnance Survey is responding to the Countryside and Rights of Way Act by working with the Countryside Commission to show land that has the "right to roam". He was also shown how Ordnance Survey can help promote the use of brownfield sites for redevelopment by identifying them through local authorities, and showing them on websites to potential developers can see where they are.

"I was most impressed by the range of uses the raw material at Ordnance Survey can be put to - helping Housing Associations manage their properties and helping the utilities to maintain their networks. Although they face competition for much of what they do, they have a reputation for quality which enables them to compete effectively and develop new markets. It was a very interesting visit."
