Guest speaker at the Wellington Arms, Sherfield was Sir George who addressed the Basingstoke Conservatives Supper Club. With him was Jan Hunter, wife of Andrew Hunter, the local MP, and Gordon Pirie, Vice-Chairman of the Development Committee.
"Tony Blair will want to hold the election on May 3rd if he possibly can. This has been planned for four years. The Third Way may be important, but not as important as the second term."
Sir George said that the Vaz affair would haunt the Government until the PM sacked the Minister. "It is difficult to see why Vaz stays on, when Mandelson's feet barely touched the carpet as he was sacked, for an offence that was infinitely smaller."
