As the franchise competition for the Waterloo to Salisbury line hots up, Sir George is pressing for an improved service. "This line is already one of the better ones. With newer rolling stock, and relatively little disruption post-Hatfield, I find I get relatively few complaints from constituents about the service itself. But what people want are more trains - particularly off-peak - and later trains up to and after midnight; commuters want more capacity in the peak-hours so fewer people have to stand; and every one wants more space in the car-parks."
"It is good news that three companies are bidding for the franchise - the competition between them will drive up the quality of the bids."
