Commenting on the Liberal Democrats' launch of their manifesto on urban and suburban England and their pledge to introduce regional assemblies, Sir George said
"Like Labour, Liberal Democrats are committed to abolishing county councils as part of their plans to break up Britain and create a 'Europe of the Regions'. Regionalisation will mean the demolition of local government and centralisation of power away from local people. My constituents would prefer to keep Hampshire County Council rather than lose it to a remote Wessex Regional Assembly.
"Liberal Democrats also want a new regional income tax of up to 3p on the basic rate to fund these regional assemblies - adding £935 to the average families' tax bill. Hardworking people and families don't want to pay higher taxes for yet more bureaucracy and red tape."
