Speaking after his re-election as MP for North West Hants, Sir George said that all those who were committed to our system of parliamentary democracy should be concerned at the reduced turnout in the General Election.
"It is a challenge to all the parties to broaden their base and engage the public in political debate."
Sir George also suggested that North West Hants should look at a better way of counting the votes.
"My result came out at 6.15 am - one of the last in the Country, although there were only four candidates and no recounts. It was not fair on the tellers - many of whom had to go straight out to work - to take over 8 hours to count the votes - let alone the candidates and supporters. Sunderland did it in just over 40 minutes!"
