Sir George calls for talks on Sainsbury's Distribution Depot
25 Jun 2001
Following the announcement that Sainsbury's will be operating a distribution depot from Greenham Common Industrial Park, for which planning consent has been given by West Berkshire District Council, Sir George has called for talks with Basingstoke and Deane District Council, and Hampshire County Council.

"There is growing concern about the volume of traffic on the A339, most of which is in Basingstoke and Deane District. There are obviously implications for this road from planning decisions taken the other side of the county boundary. I understand that Sainsbury's have undertaken not to use the A339 eastbound to Basingstoke, apart for traffic bound for their stores in the Basingstoke area. That is welcome news. But there is anxiety in Newtown about traffic going west, which might use the old A34. I have asked Sainsbury's to discuss with the relevant authorities and was pleased to hear that they have agreed. Of course we all want fresh food at our supermarkets and I hope it can get there using, wherever possible, roads built for their large vehicles."
