Part of the Ecchinswell Festival was a cricket match with the Black Sheep of Burghclere - the neighbouring village.
"I was delighted to umpire part of this match. As both villages are in the constituency, I had to be neutral. I understand the rules of cricket have changed since I last played for the House of Commons team in 1979, but I take the view that if a batsman has just arrived, he should not be given out lbw; but if he has been around for a long time, then he probably should be. The trajectory of the ball is relevant, but not decisive."
