The Official Opening of `Cycling Discoveries' - five specially selected cycle rides around the North Hampshire countryside - took place at the Watership Down Inn at Freefolk. Local MP and keen cyclist Sir George took to the bicycle with representatives from the Southern Tourist Board, Hampshire County Council and Compass Holidays to launch five brand new cycle routes, each exploring the woodland, waterways, leafy country lanes and hidden villages of North Hampshire, perfect for an enjoyable day out, or even a short breakaway.

Ranging from 12 to 22 miles, the routes, which have been partly developed by EU funding, are detailed in two special packs, one featuring two scenic rides that follow quiet country lanes and cycle paths and another that focuses on rides for the off-road enthusiast.

"The pubs and farms in the constituency have taken a hit, because of foot and mouth, as have the local tourist attractions. Promoting these cycle routes will do something to bring spending power back to rural areas. I very much welcome this initiative."
