Leadership - Clarke in front, Portillo out
17 Jul 2001
In the final ballot of Tory MPs, Kenneth Clarke secured the most votes, with Iain Duncan Smith a close second. Closer still in third place, with only one vote less than Duncan Smith, Michael Portillo has announced that he will withdraw from "front line politics" but remain on the back benches while also pursuing other interests in the media and possibly in business. Ken Clarke and Iain Duncan Smith will now campaign for the votes of Conservative Party members, and the result is expected on 12th September.

Here are the results from today's vote (previous votes in brackets):

Ken Clarke - 59 votes (39 in the second ballot, 36 in the first)
Iain Duncan Smith - 54 votes (42, 39)
Michael Portillo - 53 votes (50, 49)

The other candidates dropped out after the second ballot, in which they received:

David Davis - 18 votes (21 - down 3)
Michael Ancram - 17 votes (21 - down 4)
