"Staff at the station have worked hard to achieve Secure Station status and I congratulate them. The safer public transport becomes, the more people will use it."

Information from South West Trains
The national Secure Stations scheme was launched in 1998 to encourage
stations to improve security for both passengers and staff. South West Trains
works in partnership with the British Transport Police and crime prevention
charity Crime Concern to make sure that stations meet rigorous criteria set
down by the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions. This
includes re-training staff, re-designing stations and managing crime.

South West Trains takes safety and security at its stations very seriously and to
date we and Railtrack have invested around £4 million installing a combination
of Help Points and CCTV cameras around the network. The improvements,
along with the introduction of ticket barriers and mobile security guards, have
helped to reduce crime on the South West Train network by around 50 per
cent since privatisation in 1996.
A total of 29 of our stations have now been awarded Secure Station status
since the launch of the scheme, which is the highest figure of any of the train
operating companies. South West Trains was recently presented with an
award by the Princess Royal for getting the 100th Secure Station in the country.

Andover station is one of 13 South West Trains stations which have been given
the accolade recently. The others are Alton, Ascot, Basingstoke, Farnborough,
Farnham, Fratton, Godalming, Havant, Hounslow, Petersfield, Southampton
Central and Windsor and Eton Riverside.

Other South West Trains' stations that have been awarded Secure Station status
previously are: Bracknell, Eastleigh, Fareham, Feltham, Guildford, Haslemere,
Kingston, Putney, Richmond, Salisbury, Southampton Airport Parkway,
Surbiton, Twickenham, Wimbledon, Winchester and Woking.
