Sir George called in on the Andover Branch of the Halifax to meet the manager and staff.

"Last month, following the merger of Bank of Scotland and Halifax, MP's attended a meeting in Westminster where the Directors set out the benefits of the new alliance. We were invited to visit local branches to see at first hand what was happening.
I am glad I looked in at the Andover branch, where I was impressed by the range of services on offer, and the professionalism of the staff. There is a move away from handling cash to the promotion of bank accounts; and within that, to "e-banking" which many people find convenient. It is clear that the mortgage market is now extremely competitive, with quick decisions available and much of the paperwork streamlined."

"I am glad that the Halifax and the Bank of Scotland will each remain distinct within the new company; but that each half will learn from the other. As a Bank of Scotland customer, I look forward to them paying the same rate on current accounts as the Halifax!"
