Speaking at the North West Hampshire Patrons' Club and Andover Business Forum Annual Dinner, Lord Strathclyde criticised the Government's recent Wnite Paper on Reform of the House of Lords.
"They should have made a real effort to reach concensus on this subject instead of producing proposals which are only supported by the Government. They have removed the main independent element of the former House of Lords, and want to replace it with a House that is nearly all appointed."

Thanking Lord Strathclyde for his speech, Sir George said that the House of Lords was the only institution that could slow down or occasionally stop the Government, because they had no majority there. Proceeding with these ill-thought out reforms would distract the House of Lords from its primary task of holding the Government to account.
