Sir George criticises proposed changes to planning system
12 Dec 2001
Commenting on the Government's proposals to do away with structure plans, Sir George said this was a further step towards regional government and the abolition of county councils. "At the moment, Hampshire County Council is an influential player in the planning system, defending the county from overdevelopment and allocating the houses that the county needs to provide to the various districts. The Government proposes to so away with its role, which will be performed at a remote regional level.
This exposes the smaller districts such as Test Valley and Basingstoke and Deane to the huge targets the Government will set for them, without having a staunch ally at their side. It is a further nail in the coffin of the counties, and a further stgep towards remote regional government which no-one wants."
