25th Anniversary Party at St Mary Bourne
8 Aug 1999
200 Conservative supporters celebrated their local MP’s 25 years in the House of Commons at a party at the home of Mr and Mrs Arthur Thacker in St Mary Bourne on Sunday August 8th.
Chairman of NW Hants Conservatives, Mrs Margaret Wicks, presented Sir George and Lady Young with a silver salver to mark the occasion.
Thanking his supporters for their generosity, Sir George said that, over the past four years, North West
Hants could not have been more warm and welcoming, and that he was touched that so many had come to the party. “The House of Commons has changed enormously since I was first elected as the MP for Ealing Acton 25 years ago. It works more civilised hours; has many more women MP’s; and the working conditions have improved beyond recognition.” Sir George said that, when first elected, he did not expect to remain an MP for 25 years.” “I was Acton’s 6 th MP in 15 years; and it was my fourth job in 11 years. But we lasted together for 23 years, until the Boundary Commission abolished the seat and I moved here to North West Hampshire."
Sir George is seen here cutting the commemorative cake, baked by Bob Humphries.
