Sir George spent a morning with South West Trains at Basingstoke, looking at how they assess applicants and then train them.
“I was interested to hear that they have more applicants wanting to be train drivers than vacancies; and I saw just how stringent the tests are before people are accepted as trainee drivers.
There is substantial investment by South West Trains in the human capital which they employ, and I was interested in the Open Learning Centre on Platform 1 at Basingstoke Station, where employees can drop in, log on and do an NVQ or University Course."
"I also looked in at “Witts End Junction” there they train their staff. Situations are simulated with the help of actors, and staff are trained to respond correctly, defusing difficult situations, calming and reassuring customers."
