As the new village store and Post Office is built at Abbotts Ann, children from the village Primary School bury a time capsule, full of contemporary items, in the foundations.
"The village shop is making good progress and should be open in September - coinciding with the Village Fete. It is really encouraging to go to a village which is building a new shop and Post Office, instead of closing one."
"All credit to John Barlow, Chairman of the Village Shop Association (holding the sharp end of the spade) and to Jackie Stanton(next to him), Postmistress and Deputy Chairman, and the Committee for overcoming some serious obstacles and getting this show on the road."
Behind John Barlow is Clive Spencer, the architect, accompanied by representatives from Consignia, who are helping with the moving costs, and from the builders, Seymours.
After helping bury the capsule, Sir George talked to the Head of the school and the Chairman of the Governors about the prospects of building a new primary school on a larger site on the edge of the village.
